37 days, 22 hours, 56 minutes. That’s all that stands between us and the 2019-20 football season. The Packers are leading the charge against the Bears on September 5th, and we’re not ashamed to say that we’re already dusting off our Cheeseheads.
Of course, we’re psyched to watch the game, but there’s just something special about Packers fans that can’t be found anywhere else but Wisconsin. With nine championships and four Super Bowl victories under our belt, it’s hard to stay humble.
Here are 4 of our favorite reasons that we’re proud to wear The Green and Gold:
In 1993, LeRoy Butler, overcome with joy at returning a fumble recovery for a touchdown, leaped into the arms of his adoring fans. It was that day that history has made. Many have tried and all have failed to pull the stunt off with the beauty and grace of Butler, but Packers fans are always ready with open arms for the next Lambeau Leap. The move is so iconic that it was grandfathered in after the rules changes in 2000 that prohibits “excessive” celebration.
The average low temperature in Green Bay in December is a bone-chilling 16 degrees. Things only get chillier in January. And yet, despite the snow, rain, ice, and sleet, Packers fans fill the stadium at every game. Huddled together in parks and ear-flap caps, we chatter our teeth and shiver against the wind in some kind of weird, collective cheer. On the bitter wind, you can hear Go! You Packers Go!
That’s dedication.
Lambeau Field has been sold out of season tickets since 1960. Since then, the waiting list has accumulated over 100,000 names. All know that their chances of snagging a coveted season pass are less likely than finding a Bears fan in Wisconsin, yet they continue to renew their spot year after year. Like Syssiphis and his boulder, dedicated fans face the cold, harsh reality that season passes will always be out of reach.
So, why do they do it? Many hope that their grandchildren or great grandchildren will obtain what they never could. We’re not joking. People pass down their spots in their will.
Others hope that their own children will get the chance. With the current waiting time slotted at 30 years, it’s become a custom to send off for your child’s spot before the ink has dried on their birth certificate. #Cheeseheads4life
We are a team of firsts and lasts. We won the first Superbowl, opened the first stadium, and the first team to snag 13 titles. We are also the last team to remain community-owned and non-profit. The Packers had forged the path for the NFL while staying true to their hometown spirit. Plus, they’re pretty darn good at football.
