In just nine short months, football season will begin anew. The smell of grilled burgers and the stench of victory will mingle into a sweet perfume. Families and friends will gather to paint their stomachs in green and gold, then slap a wedge of cheese on their heads. It’s like Christmas… Only better. The last thing you want to worry about, though, is where to tailgate at Lambeau Field.
Think you’re ready to join the elite?
Becoming a Packers tailgate MVP doesn’t happen overnight. These skills need to be honed over time through intelligence gathering and research. A tailgate party is an art and a science, marrying together finesse and data into something bigger than the sum of its parts. Some will fall… Others will fly. We can only hope that you get out of it alive.
If you’re up for the challenge, read on. We’ve put together Anduzzi’s secret recipe for the best tailgate party ever, from knowing where to tailgate at Lambeau Field to divvying up the cooking, so you have time to enjoy the game.
Parking during a Packer’s game can get pretty complicated… They offer season passes for the stadium lot, but those often sell out before you can say “Go Pack Go!” If you do manage to snag a pass, the lot opens 4 hours before kickoff, with stadium restrooms available until an hour before kickoff. Once you arrive, you get up to 6’ behind your vehicle for some grillin’ and chillin’.
Once you’ve scored a space, it’s time to plan out your menu. This is, perhaps, the most vital part of a tailgate party. It has to be delicious, it has to be portable, and it has to fuel a long day of cheering, celebrating, and drinking beer. You’ll also need to take kickoff time into account… If it’s an early game, no one wants to eat brisket at 8:00 in the morning.
The ideal early game menu would include brunch items: waffles, mimosas, bacon, toast, maybe a fancy quiche.
Later games deserve classic barbecue fare, like burgers, hotdogs, potato salad, and cold beer.
If you’re worried about getting everything done in time, send out a survey asking all of your guests to bring a little something to help out with cost and labor. The Johnsons could provide orange juice, Martha could make her famous cole slaw, and the Porters caan bring their cornhole game. Don’t try to take on a whole tailgate by yourself, especially if it’s your first time. It won’t be very fun, and it could cost you a lot more moolah than you were expecting.
Plan a couple of activities for pre-kickoff, when the food’s all gone and everyone is anxiously awaiting the stadium doors to open. Cornhole and beer pong are classic favorites, but you could get a little more creative. Whether it’s a chilli cookoff, karaoke, or creating your own Packers-themed photobooth, you’ll want something to fill your time. You could even ask everyone to bring their favorite board games and have a tournament to crown the Ultimate Champion over the course of the season!
Whew, prepping for a Packer’s tailgate sure does take a lot of work. If only there were an easier way to hang out, watch the game, eat great food, and drink cold beer…
